How to Increase Organic Traffic

Most startups have two things in common: no traffic and no money.

No spam guarantee.

Without money, it´s hard to get attention and without traffic, it´s hard to get customers for your products.

Although Google doesn´t charge you anything for organic traffic, it isn´t really free. To get organic traffic you need to publish content that helps your customers. And content creation takes either money to hire writers or your time to write it.

Don´t skip this post, just because you don´t like writing, or if you don´t have time to write articles. I´ve got you covered!

I show you tools that massively reduce the workload and solutions to outsource the whole thing.

No more excuses. If you want to discover the best ways to create content on a budget, read on!

The Benefits of Organic Traffic

When it comes to organic traffic, there are a few key benefits that businesses can reap. Perhaps the most obvious benefit is the fact that organic traffic is basically free. Unlike other forms of marketing, such as paid search or social media advertising, businesses don’t have to spend any money to get their website in front of potential customers. This makes organic traffic a great option for startups and small businesses on a tight budget.

Another major benefit of organic traffic is that it can help improve your website’s conversion rate. When people find your website through search engines, they’re already interested in what you have to offer. This means they’re more likely to buy something from you or sign up for your email list. They are already driven by a problem that led them to ask Google for a solution.

Organic traffic is also long-lasting. Unlike paid ads, which might disappear overnight if you run out of money, organic traffic continues to come in as long as your site is ranked high on search engine results pages. This means that every post you write is an asset, that increases in value. The higher it ranks on Google and the more clicks you get, the higher its value.

Free evergreen traffic with high conversion rates is enough benefit for me to pursue this strategy. Now, let´s see how we can accomplish this task.

How to Rank on Google

When we talk about organic traffic, we talk about ranking on Google, as they dominate the search engine market with a share of 92.47% (Statista, June 2021). In short, the steps to rank your website on Google are:

  • Create a customer persona to find out, what kind of content your customer is looking for.
  • Find low competition keywords
  • Create content
  • Update your content

We could also talk about hundreds of SEO tips and hacks, but this can easily distract you from the most important part, which simply is publishing good content that helps your customers. On my journey in content marketing, I decided to completely focus on this main task, and that is what I would also recommend to startups, small businesses, and solopreneurs. That said, let´s have a deeper look into content creation.

Customer Persona

A customer persona is a fictional representation of your ideal customer. Creating a customer persona allows you to better understand your target market, and helps you to create messaging and content that resonates with them.

There are many different factors that go into creating a customer persona, including age, gender, income, marital status, education level, and occupation. You’ll also want to include information about your customers’ interests and hobbies, as well as their pain points and challenges.

Once you have created a customer persona, you can use it to drive your marketing efforts. For example, if you know that your target market is parents with young children, you can create content that speaks to their needs and interests. You can also use your customer persona to determine which channels are most effective for reaching your target market.

Questions that help to create a customer persona include: what is the customer’s age, gender, marital status, education level, occupation, income level, and lifestyle? What are the customer’s interests and activities? What are the customer’s pain points? What are the customer’s needs and wants? What motivates the customer?

How to Research Keywords that Your Customers Use

Keyword research is essential for understanding what words and phrases people are using to find information online. By understanding which keywords people are using, businesses can create content that is more relevant to their customers and easier to find on search engine results pages. Additionally, keyword research can help businesses understand the competition for specific keywords and identify opportunities to rank higher on search engine results pages. There are different kinds of keywords with different characteristics.

Generic keywords

Generic keywords are words that can be used to search for information in a database. They are general terms that don’t refer to a specific subject or topic. For example, the word “book” is a generic keyword that could be used to search for information about books in a library database.

Brand-specific keywords

Brand-specific keywords are words or phrases that are used by people who are looking for a specific product or service. These keywords are usually specific to a certain brand, and people who are looking for that particular brand will use these terms to search for information online. Brand-specific keywords can be used to help improve the visibility of a website or to target ads to people who are interested in a particular product. Examples are keywords like Nike, Adidas, or Reebok.

Intent-based keywords

Intent-based keywords are those that indicate the searcher’s intent. They may be informational, navigational, or transactional in nature. Intent-based keywords are often determined by using keyword research tools to analyze which words and phrases people are using when they search for information online.

The following are examples of transactional keywords which are used to initiate or complete a financial transaction: best, buy, sell, trade, rent, lease, loan, subscribe, near me, for sale, cheap, discount, coupon, find, shipping, best price, price.

Long-tail keywords

Long-tail keywords are a marketer’s best friend. Unlike generic terms, which are high-traffic and highly competitive, long-tail keywords are low-traffic and less competitive. Long-tail keywords are typically three or more words in length, and they’re more specific than generic terms. They’re also easier to rank for because there’s less competition.

Long-tail keywords are a great way to target your audience’s search intent. When people use generic terms in their searches, they may not be specific about what they’re looking for. But when people use long-tail keywords, they’re more likely to be looking for something specific. That makes them more likely to convert into customers.

How to find long-tail keywords

You can start your keyword research with Google Search. Brainstorm some ideas and analyze the search results. Also, check out Google Autocomplete (the suggestions from Google while you enter a search term) and Related Searches (Google shows you results for “People also ask”; click on some results to get more).

In any case, you should use Google Search Console, which you can connect with your website for free. Console delivers you the exact data, which keywords brought how much traffic to your website. This is probably the best of all tools to analyze the past performance of your blog, but you will recognize soon, that you need more information to find new keywords, and that your website isn´t ranking yet. That´s where keyword research tools come into play.

To bring your keyword research to the next level, you need a keyword research tool. There are many tools available, some are great but expensive, and some are cheap but useless. After testing several keyword tools, I decided on WriterZen, which offers great research options for an affordable price. Just click on the banner below to get it on AppSumo.

How to find Keywords with WriterZen

Open the Keyword Explorer in WriterZen and enter a keyword. In my example, I did it with the keyword “how to get organic traffic”. See the screenshot below.

I used WriterZen to research the keyword “how to get organic traffic”
My first results on WriterZen with a search volume of 50 and ad KD of 20, which is OK, but not amazing.

The keyword data included 102 keywords total with a total search volume of 1,690 per month. The first keyword in the list is “how to get organic traffic to your website” with a volume of 50 searches per month and a keyword difficulty (KD) of 20/100. KD gives you an estimation of how difficult it is to rank for a certain keyword. When your blog is new, you should only pursue low-competition keywords, which are the ones up to a KD of about 20. This is not an exact science, but more a rough estimate. You must understand that all keyword tools just give you their best guess, even if they tell you exact numbers like a KD of 20. You must take all these results with a grain of salt. But anyway, such keyword tools are very helpful, because you can research large databases very efficiently within seconds. If you try to do this manually on Google Search it would take you weeks or months or forever.

Back to my WriterZen result. To find the easiest keyword with the highest volume, I clicked on “Volume” to sort the complete list by the search volume. The second result was gold and represents the keyword for this article, “how to increase organic traffic”. WriterZen shows a search volume of 210 per month and a very compelling keyword difficulty of 15/100.

I found my target keyword for this post “how to increase organic traffic” with 210 searches and a KD of 15 simply by sorting by volume.

This is the easiest way I know to find valuable low-competition keywords with WriterZen. I´m sure there are much more possibilities, as WriterZen offers lots of options to refine your search. But I love simple solutions, that are effective and easy to explain. WriterZen also offers a huge knowledge database with video tutorials, where you can learn all the secrets of keyword research.

How to Create Content that Generates Organic Traffic

The Minimum Viable Post

Before we get into content creation, I would like to remember you of the concept of the minimum viable product (MVP). An MVP is a product with just enough features to satisfy early customers and to provide feedback for future development. The goal of an MVP is to get a product into the hands of users as quickly as possible to start gathering feedback.

You can use this concept also for content creation, where we can call it MVP too, the minimum viable post. The feedback we wait for is the ranking on Google and its message is the same as with software development: Forget Perfection!

Perfectionism is a dangerous mindset to have when it comes to content creation. When you are aiming for perfection, you are setting the bar so high that it’s impossible to reach. This can lead to frustration and a feeling of inadequacy, which can ultimately discourage you from creating content at all. Additionally, perfectionism can cause you to spend more time on your content than is necessary, which can lead to missed deadlines and decreased productivity.

Every piece of content, every article, and every video or post on social media is an MVP. Build it as fast as possible and see how well it ranks on Google. When it starts to rank, then you should improve it. It´s simply more effective to create more (unperfect) pieces of content and update them later than to make every single post perfect before you publish it.

Start with a Content Plan

A content plan is a valuable tool for any business, as it helps to organize and plan the distribution of content across various platforms. By developing a content plan, businesses can better understand their target audience, identify key messaging points, and determine what content is most effective in reaching their desired audience. Additionally, a content plan can help to improve the overall quality and consistency of content, which can help to build trust and credibility with customers.

The structure of your content plan should be simple. Start with a spreadsheet in Excel or Google sheets and prepare the following columns: Keyword, Search Volume, Keyword Difficulty, Title, Words, Link, and Published. See my content plan for Finmods below.

My Content Plan for Finmods

Some cells in the keyword column are empty, although there is an article; that´s when I have an idea for an article, that I want to write regardless of keyword research, where I think that it fits my concept. In the lower part you see several keywords, but now articles yet; these are my planned articles, based on my keyword research.

Make a list of content ideas first, and then start to create the content. You will be faster because you can focus on finding ideas one time and on creating content another time.

Use Compelling Headlines

There are many benefits to compelling headlines. First, compelling headlines can help to grab a reader’s attention, which is especially important for online articles that may otherwise go unnoticed. Additionally, compelling headlines can help to communicate the main point of an article quickly and effectively, which can be helpful for readers who are looking for specific information. Furthermore, compelling headlines can help to create a sense of urgency or excitement around an article, which can encourage readers to take action.

There is no one formula for writing compelling headlines, but there are a few general things to keep in mind. First, be clear and concise. Your headline should accurately reflect the content of your article, without being overly wordy. Second, make sure your headline is interesting. It should catch the reader’s attention and make them want to learn more. And finally, be sure to use strong keywords that will help your article rank higher on search engine results pages.

Get Help from WordHero

The benefits of AI software for writing are vast. First, AI can help to improve the quality and accuracy of writing. Second, AI can help to speed up the writing process. Third, AI can help to ensure consistency in writing style. Fourth, AI can help to find errors in writing. Fifth, AI can help to generate new ideas for writing. Sixth, AI can help to improve the readability of writing. Seventh, AI can help to break through writer’s block.

When I heard of AI writing software first, I was skeptical but highly interested. As I saw a good chance to improve my content output, I invested some time to test several AI writing programs like Jasper, Writersonic, and Word Hero. Finally, I decided on WordHero, which I´m a big fan of now because WordHero is the best AI writing tool I know.

To become efficient with AI writers, you need two things. A good AI program and some time to learn to guide the AI to get the results you expect. AI-assisted writing doesn´t work so fine (yet) if you just enter a topic and expect the AI to write the whole post on its own; at least that´s my personal experience at this point in time. But AI-assisted writing becomes amazing, as soon as you know how to guide the AI. You can imagine this as telling your assistant roughly what content you want and then working on it paragraph by paragraph. You provide the idea of a paragraph and tell the AI to write it. This took me about 2 weeks of daily working with an AI writer. Now, I don´t want to miss it anymore.

And using an AI writing assistant doesn´t mean, that you don´t can write yourself anymore. When I have a thought, I can choose to write it out myself or to direct my AI assistant. This article is a good example. Parts I wrote completely myself, and parts did my AI writer. Check out the screenshot below, where I write this post.

The impact of AI-assisted writing is massive, as I was able to increase my output about fivefold.

WordHero vs Hiring a Writer

WordHero is not only a charm to work with, it´s a bargain too! Just compare it with the cost of an average human writer of 10 ct per word. Ordering a 1,500 words article will cost you about $150. If you order only ten articles per month, your monthly cost for content would be $1,500.

  • As of June 2022, you can get WordHero for only $49 per month, get access to all writing tools, and generate unlimited content!
  • As soon as you learned how to use WordHero, which takes about 2 weeks of practice, you can easily create these 10 posts each 1.5k words with the assistance of WordHero with an effort of 1 to 2 hours per post.
  • In essence, for 10 to 20 hours of work and $49, you can create content worth $1,500.
  • If you value one hour with $20, your input equals $249 to $449.
  • That´s an ROI of 6:1 to 3.3:1.
  • If you choose the yearly plan, that ROI climbs to 10.2:1 to 5.6:1.
  • And there is a ton of potential upside if you want to create more posts, because WordHero provides unlimited content generation.

WordHero´s Benefits in a Glance

WordHero has some benefits, that I haven´t mentioned yet. So, here is the complete offer from WordHero, as of June 2022, valid for a limited time:

Improve Content that Ranks

With a new website, you probably don´t have any organic visitors at the beginning. That´s why you publish almost only for Google, at least in the beginning. As soon, as your content starts to rank and gets read by humans, it´s time to improve it. And this will give it some extra boost to rank it even higher. Here are some ideas to consider:

  • Write catchy headlines
  • Write effective meta descriptions
  • Use keywords throughout your post
  • Optimize your posts for SEO
  • Improve your content
  • Use images and videos
  • Engage with your audience (comments, social media)
  • Share your posts on social media
  • Improve your backlinks

Two Basic SEO Tips

Although I recommend ignoring most of the SEO tips and tricks at the beginning, you should make sure, that your website meets two essential criteria.

Make your website fast

There are a number of reasons why a website might want to ensure that its pages load quickly. One reason is that research has shown that people are more likely to leave a website if it takes more than three seconds to load. Another reason is that slow-loading pages can hurt a website’s search engine ranking. Finally, fast-loading pages can make for a better user experience, leading to more engagement and longer visits.

Make your website mobile-friendly

The number of people using mobile devices to access the internet is increasing every day. According to a study by Google, 61% of users are more likely to abandon a website if it’s not mobile-friendly. That’s why it’s important for businesses to have a mobile-friendly website – so they don’t lose potential customers.

Conclusion

We learned some lessons to get organic traffic. First of all, create quality content. Second, write content, that your typical customer is looking for. Third, hire writers or use AI writing tools. Today, there is no more excuse for not publishing content on a regular basis. So, get out of your comfort zone, and grab the tools you need to get the traffic you want!
